World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…

Day one on the Middle Owyhee
Hello!
How are you? I hope everyone is having an amazing winter. We are getting hammered with snow and the long-term forecasts look very promising - we should have a long season on our spring rivers like the Cal Salmon, Illinois, and Owyhee. It is going to be an unbelievable spring!
We have had a busy winter and have once again added some new trips – you can read about our new Fall Fishing trips below. We also spent a lot of time collecting and organizing our photos and have some amazing new trip slide shows. For most of the trips below I am going to let the pictures do the talking (there is also a link to a slide show for many of the trips) – think of this newsletter as the “Coffee Table Book” of email newsletters:).
As always I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful reviews on sites like Yelp and Trip Advisor (there is also a new Google one called “Hot Pot”)! Online reviews are changing the way people shop for trips, allow us to focus on trip quality rather than a ton of marketing, and most importantly make traveling easier and more enjoyable for all of us! Thank You!
Bookings for all our spring trips are already coming in and summer trips on the Rogue are filling up - if you are interested or have questions give us a call or an email! We hope to see you in the spring and summer!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions

Airplane Turn on the Cal Salmon
The California Salmon 3 day / 3 night - Class V
Every spring starts with this one. The Salmon is one of the most spectacular rafting trips in the country; it is world-class whitewater in our back yard. The canyon is spectacular and the rapids are amazing; it’s a magical place. 3-day options include a day on the rarely run class V Scott River or the amazing Clear Creek. This makes the trip one of the premier class V adventures in the country!
The Salmon season is short and the prime dates always fill so give us a call or email if you are interested.
There is more Cal Salmon info at the California Salmon Rafting Page.
And check out our new Cal Salmon slideshow.

Klondike Creek Camp
The Illinois 4-Day – Class 4+ (V)
One of the great wilderness river journeys in the country - some say the best. Few rivers can match its combination of extreme isolation, solitude, beauty, and whitewater. Trips are kept very small with a 2 or 3 to one guest to guide ratio and the season can be very short (April – early May).
This a one of our most sought after spring trips and we can only take 24 people a year - call or email if you have any questions.
There is more Illinois info at the Illinois Rafting Page.
Check out our new Illinois River Slideshow.

The Lower Owyhee
The Lower Owyhee 5-day – Class 3
The Lower Owyhee has been compared to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks but in the end it probably defies direct comparisons. The river is a land of hot springs and hoodoos, of towing bluffs, and windswept plateaus, of jaw dropping beauty and awe inspiring loneliness. It is extremely remote, bizarrely beautiful, unpredictable, sometimes haunting, very wild, and rarely seen. It’s fun mild rapids make it a great option for a wide range of people.
We have trips scheduled in April and May.
There is more Lower Owyhee info at the Owyhee River Rafting Page.
Yes, another slideshow! Check out Lower Owyhee Flickr Slideshow.

The Middle Owyhee
The Middle Owyhee 4-day – Class 4+
This is one of the most exotic and rarely run river trips in the country - A journey to one of the most remote lands in the lower 48. It combines dramatic dark sheer canyon walls, big rapids, and it is even more remote then the Lower. While there is only one class V rapid the remoteness makes it a true expedition. One of our trips was featured on OPB’s Oregon Field Guide.
This river trip is a true wilderness experience and the snowpack is perfect for it this year!
There is more info on our Middle Owyhee River page.
Check out photos on our Middle Owyhee Flickr Slideshow.
Also Check out Oregon Field Guides episode on the Middle Owyhee.

Clear Creek
Clear Creek Inflatable Kayaking Trip 3-Day – Class 4
This is a trip that we probably do not talk about enough. Clear Creek is like no other stretch of river in the country and this is one of the most unique trips we offer. We start our trip on a spectacularly beautiful, remote, and extremely rarely run tributary of the Klamath - it is very narrow with high canyon walls and the water is as clear and clean as its name implies. It is truly a magical place that you have to see to believe.
Clear Creek has a short season from late May to early June.
More info about our Clear Creek trips.
Even if you are not interested in the trip the photos are spectacular!

Stair Creek Falls on the Rogue
Rogue River 3 To 4-Day Wilderness Trip
An iconic American classic, a wilderness playground. One of the world’s great summer wilderness trips complete with remote riverside lodges. The rapids and the choice of craft make the Rogue almost unmatched in its ability to satisfy a wide range of tastes and skill levels.
We generally don’t feature summer trips in our winter newsletter, but the Rogue is extremely regulated and there is limited space - most of our trips will have only 10 to 12 people and many are already full. Check it out this summer!
There is more info at the Rogue River Page.
And a slide show.
We also have an amazing specialty trip on the Rogue this year that we are particularly excited about! We have been extremely excited about the local farm movement and we have finally been able to truly combine it with a river trip. We are so excited about this trip!
Rogue River Farm to Fork 4-DayJoin Farm to Fork and Momentum River Expeditions on a 4-Day Farm to Fork Rafting Trip on Oregon’s Wild and Scenic Rogue River. Combine the world famous Rogue River with artisan meals straight from the Southern Oregon farms and support the local farming movement!
Farm to Fork Events, is a traveling farm-to-table restaurant, local food fundraiser, and community celebration rolled into one. Farm to Fork Events are designed to reconnect people to the source of their food, and to honor the talented farmers, food artisans, winemakers, and chefs that contribute to the growing culinary reputations and local food communities of Southern Oregon. They began in 2010 to rave reviews, a very excited local community, and ending up selling out every dinner. We are very excited to work with them!
This trip is already getting full and once again we are so excited for it!
Read more about the trip here.

Drift Boats on the Rogue
Fall fishing on Oregon’s Rogue River
Our newest trips! We have been working on these trips (and running them) for over a year now and we are very excited! The Rogue River offers the mix of a world-class wilderness canyon, whitewater, old west history, wilderness lodging, and fall Steelhead Fishing. The river is an iconic American classic, one of the world’s great wilderness trips, and a founding member of the National Wild and Scenic River System, We offer two trips styles; one that is great for all levels of fishing ability, including first timers; and one that is geared towards the more avid fly fisherman.
The trips are offered September through mid November.

And of course our fishing slide show!

World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…

The Whitewater of Chile’s Rio Futaleufu
Thank you all for a wonderful season!
Thanks to all who joined us this year. The year started with the best spring we have ever had and continued right through the summer and fall. You can read some of our favorite reviews, or check out some of the reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp. We have compiled some of the best photos we have of this year’s trips on Facebook. If you have any good ones you would like to share you can add them to the Momentum page – we would love to see them! There are also a few short videos from this year on our YouTube channel.
Fall is here and we are starting to close up the warehouse and prepare for our winter trips to Chile and for next season. Below there is info on:

“Night and day the river flows. If time is the mind of space, the River is the soul of the desert. Brave boatmen come, they go, they die, the voyage flows on forever. We are all canyoneers. We are all passengers on this little mossy ship, this delicate dory sailing round the sun that humans call the earth. Joy, shipmates, joy.”

What Is Happening On The River(s) You Have Run?
“Choosing to save a river is more often an act of passion than of careful calculation. You make the choice because the river has touched your life in an intimate and irreversible way, because you are unwilling to accept its loss.”
David Bolling, How to Save a River: Handbook for Citizen Action
We love the rivers we run and feel that it is critical to preserve their wildness, remoteness, and beauty. As a company we have always supported and been very involved in protecting them and we are lucky to live in an area that has an especially rich array of groups that look for effective, logical, and broadly supported solutions. We would also like to give you the option to either become more educated about the rivers you have visited or to help out. So every fall we include this section in our newsletter and update you on what is going on in each watershed.
We live in a time when nobody seems to agree on anything and when facts, common sense, and a willingness to find common solutions too often lose out to ridiculous inflammatory sound bites and unfocused anger. Because of this we tried to choose campaigns that would be effective and have broad support among local groups and among people of different political leanings. However, we understand that there are many different opinions and in the end we understand that our most important job is to show you these places, give you a break from everyday life, and run the highest quality river trips in the west.
After that it is up to you.
The Rogue River, Illinois River, Lower Klamath River, and Clear Creek
Siskiyou Crest National Monument – We are extremely excited about this.
The visually stunning and ecologically diverse Siskiyou Crest straddles the Oregon/California border and includes the headwater streams of the Applegate, Illinois (major tributaries to the Rogue) and Klamath Rivers (including Clear Creek). The mountain ranges and river valleys that define this region are some of the most spectacular in America, it is a world renowned hub of biological diversity, and a day of walking through the area can feel as if hundreds of miles have passed.
The Siskiyou Crest has garnered attention for years and a campaign was launched in July 2009 to make it America’s next National Monument. The “National Monument” designation is a great way to integrate a wide array of traditional and growing uses, local community and tribal needs while protecting the headwaters of the Rogue, Illinois, and Klamath rivers (and others) from threats from mining, over grazing, and old growth logging. Also communities bordering protected areas tend to have strong, diverse, sustainable economies - Something that is sorely needed in areas around the proposed monument that have struggled for many years (think Happy Camp - at the moment known as “Unhappy Camp”).
Visit www.siskiyoucrest.org for more information.
Their “myth vs facts” link near the bottom of the home page is an especially great read.
You can also easily send a letter to your senator (it only takes a few minutes!).
This is win-win for both the Environment and the Economy and we are once again very excited about it!
The Lower Rogue River
Save the Wild Rogue:
The Rogue is one of America’s most famous wilderness rivers. A coalition of local and national outdoor industry businesses, rafting and angling companies and conservationists launched a campaign in 2007 to strengthen protections for the Lower Rogue River. The “Save the Wild Rogue” campaign proposes to protect the tributaries of the Zane Grey Roadless Area. For those who have been on the river these tributaries are the beautiful, cool, side streams that we stop at to hang out by and swim in. In June 2009, bills were introduced in the U.S. House and Senate to add 143 miles of Rogue tributaries to the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This legislation would safeguard tributaries that provide important cold water to the Rogue River and valuable fish habitat for salmon that migrate upstream from the Pacific.
Recent economic studies by ECONorthwest found that, in 2007, recreation on the river provided $30 million in economic benefits to the state of Oregon through fishing, rafting and hiking. In total, the studies determined that Rogue River salmon runs provide more than $1.5 billion in economic benefits to West Coast Residents each year, including the ‘non-use value’ of these fish. This is essentially the monetary value people place on the existence of a natural resource, the ability to pass it on to future generations, and the option to use it in the future.
The “Save the Wild Rogue” campaign is so close to working. A compromise was made with the timber industry to use a wilderness designation as opposed to a Wild and Scenic designation. It is a little confusing – the wilderness designation offers even better protection, but it is a precedence issue for the timber industry. Now, there is no organized opposition to the proposed legislation to expand the Wild Rogue Wilderness – this includes the American Forest Resource Council; a timber industry coalition who’s president said “It’s something that makes sense — we won’t oppose this,” It is another win-win situation and the only thing keeping it from happening is that Congress has yet to introduce the legislation.
Check out www.savethewildrogue.org for more info and please send a quick email to your congress person.
Once again this is something where there is no local organized opposition – we are just waiting on Congress – a little push from all of us might be all it takes!
The Owyhee River
Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness Area:
Straddling the intersection of southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, and northern Nevada, the Owyhee Canyonlands encompasses 3 million acres of public land – twice the size of Yellowstone National Park. This region is the largest expanse of undeveloped and unprotected wildlands left in the United States outside of Alaska. The Owyhee’s vast network of deep basalt river canyons and sagebrush-peppered plateaus provide key habitat for a number of threatened or sensitive species including the world’s largest herd of California bighorn sheep, several species of bats, sage grouse, redband trout, peregrine falcons, golden eagles, pronghorn antelope, elk, longnose snakes, bobcats, and pygmy rabbits.
Over the next year The Oregon Natural Desert Association will be ramping up efforts to work with local agencies, individuals, and communities to create the Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness Area. ONDA has been very good about understanding the importance of ensuring decisions made about wilderness are beneficial to all the parties involved. This is a very new campaign and up to date information will be found at www.onda.org.
The California Salmon
The Salmon River Restoration Council:
The Salmon River Restoration council is one of the most unique grass roots groups we have seen. Drawing from a diverse and extremely off the beaten path community of less than 200 people the group manages to do an amazing amount of work protecting one of our all time favorite rivers (in fact they are so busy it can be difficult to even get a hold of them!).
The following is from Sarah Hugdahl of the Salmon River Restoration Council:
“The SRRC has many facets to our work in the Salmon Watershed. Besides maintaining the Watershed Center in Sawyers Bar with its public access to wifi, Salmon River area maps and info, and other amenities, the SRRC’s Watershed Ed Program has been having fun teaching about the many aquatic communities in the classrooms of Forks Elementary and Junction School. We organize an annual Salmon River Cooperative Spring Chinook/Summer Steelhead Population Dive. In the fall we count Fall Chinook spawning redds and then the fish carcasses to add to the data. The SRRC has been working to manage noxious weeds since 1994. We successfully use manual treatment to controlling and/or eradicating populations of invasive plants on the Salmon River and upslope. We also have a team working on monitoring river temperatures and flows, and replanting native species. We operate a greenhouse to propagate native vegetation, which will be planted in prioritized riparian areas to provide shaded habitat and cover for fish.
This summer SRRC did work improving fish passage at many Salmon River tributaries. Rearranging rocks at the mouths of tributaries created passable fish-ways, increasing the amount of available fish habitat. SRRC manages 2 fuels reduction crews. They remove brush, dead and down and ladder fuels, and small snags and do prescribed burning. We have an online calendar of Klamath Basin related events and try to unite all the shareholders in making the Salmon River as healthy and close to pristine as possible. Adopt-A-Hwy and regular river clean up days are part of what we do as well. We partnered up with Siskiyou County to remove junk cars and tons of junk metal.”
Please visit http://www.srrc.org to learn more – these people are grassroots at its finest!
“And I count myself more fortunate with each passing season to have recourse to these quiet, tree-strewn, untrimmed acres by the water. I would think it a sad commentary on the quality of American life if, with our pecuniary and natural abundance, we could not secure for our generation and those to come the existence of . . . a substantial remnant of a once great endowment of wild and scenic rivers.”
William Anderson, Congressman from Tennessee, Arguing for passage of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (1968)

World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…

the Rogue River- Mule Creek Canyon in the summer..
Hello Everyone!
We are here in the middle of a beautiful summer and I decided to sit down and write a rare summer newsletter. It will be short, but hopefully sweet (like this summer has been so far!).
First off I want to thank everyone who joined us this spring! Those who did may have seen snow, rain, wind, sun, AND some of the best water we have ever had! With all the late snow it was a spring for the ages – thank you all so much! We have soooo many spring photos – once things slow down we will get a chance to go through them and put them in a nice slide show for the fall newsletter….
It is HOT! And….. we still do have space on some of our summer trips. The Upper Klamath is rockin’ with its normal big water summer flows – there is no day trip like it in the West. It is also arguably the wettest trip day trip in the West - which is great when the temps are hovering around 100 degrees! We also have very limited space on Rogue Wilderness trips this summer (most of these were full by March). Give us a call for last minute cancellations. If you can’t make it this summer but still want to get on this year fall is an amazing time to see it and we have fall specials on lodge trips. We also have space on our trip at the end of August on British Columbia’s Chilko – incredible diverse scenery, the longest rapid on the continent, and the wilderness of British Columbia!
We are also excited to announce our newest trip – Fall wilderness fly-fishing trips on the Rogue River. From mid September through Mid November we will run Lodge to Lodge wilderness fly fishing trips on the Rogue – there is no trip like it in the continental United States.
Below there is info on our summer trips with space, Fall lodge trips on the Rogue, Fall fishing trips, winter in chile (the ‘Fu’) and our 2011 spring schedule (yes it is out). We wish everyone a wonderful rest of the summer and hopefully we will see you on the river!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions
“Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.”
Winnie the Pooh
Rogue River 3 to 4-Day Wilderness Trips We have limited space from cancellations on one of the world’s great summer wilderness trips. We offer 3-day lodge trips where nights are spent in comfortable and rustic wilderness lodges and 4-day camp trips where nights are spent under the stars.
Cool water, swimming holes everywhere, it is the perfect summer wilderness trip. Call, email, or check out our Rogue River Page for space and to find out more.
Summer on the Upper Klamath For many the Upper Klamath is a yearly pilgrimage (along with a Shakespeare play) and it is definitely the most exciting summer class-IV day trip in the West – it is just really really fun! As I said above it is also the wettest day trip in the west and with the dam releases we still have BIG water. We will be on the Upper ‘K’ through September - take a day off (or two) and join us!
There is more Upper Klamath info at the Upper Klamath Rafting Page.

British Columbia’s Chilko River
The Chilko, Chilcotin and Fraser Rivers - a 7 Day Journey into the Wilderness of British Columbia!
Join us on August 29th for a 7-day journey down the Chilko, Chilcotin and Fraser Rivers - a trip unmatched in its scenic diversity and huge stretch of class IV whitewater. Big John, Farwell, and Lava Canyons; the continent’s longest stretch of commercially navigable whitewater; bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, wolves, and birds of all types; all set in the legendary wilderness of British Columbia.
I am so excited for this trip - if you have any questions please give me a call or an email!
Read more about it here.
Rogue River 3-Day Fall Lodge Trips The Fall is an amazing time to Raft the Rogue! Mild temperatures, fewer people, more bear sightings, and fall foliage. This year we are offering 10% off on select Lodge trips in September. Check our schedule here and look for “Rogue Wilderness Fall Special Lodge Trip”.
Rogue River Wilderness Fly-Fishing Trips We are excited to announce our newest trip – Fall wilderness fly-fishing trips on the Rogue River. From mid September through mid November we will run 3 and 4-day Lodge to Lodge wilderness fly fishing trips on the Rogue. We will fish for Steelhead and Fall Chinook and with the lodges there is no trip like it in the continental United States. Anthony (many of you have probably met him on a rafting trip) will be managing and guiding along with Irv Urie. Irv has been fishing and guiding on the Rogue for over 40 years, is a wonderful teacher, and knows the river as well as anyone alive. This trip will not be advertised to everyone until next year. Right now it is being filled with Irv’s past guests and people we have mentioned it to during trips – and now all of you! This is truly a unique trip and no fishing experience is required.
Call or email if you are interested!

World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…

the Illinois River - lower canyons in early spring. The cover photo of our 2010 brochure.
Spring is here!
Well…
Kind of…
We continue to get late snow with what looks to be the last real round today and tomorrow. In between the winter weather we have been very lucky with perfect weather on our spring trips – our weekend trip on the Scott had blue sky and temps in the 70’s!
We usually talk mostly about our summer trips in the spring newsletter. However, the late snow means that we are looking at one of the best spring seasons we have ever had. The snow pack on our spring rivers is WAY above average so if you have not already taken advantage of one of our spring trips give us a call. There will be plenty of water on some of the best rivers in the country. We have mid May Lower Owyhee trips that still have space, late May and early June class 5 California Salmon trips with a little space (including a new rapid), and we have two Illinois trips with a few spots left (it was written up in Outside Magazine this year!).
Summer is coming up fast and like last year there are some really good flight deals. Below there is info on our summer trips and flight deals. Remember – our trips are fully outfitted so no need to check bags and pay extra! Our Rogue Wilderness trips are getting very full – we have listed trip dates with the space remaining at the end. There is also info on our late summer trip to British Columbia (one of the longest stretches of whitewater anywhere – we are excited!).
We will be adding a ton more trip videos this year – view them on our YouTube Channel or on our Facebook Page (become a fan and see video and pictures as they arrive). Check out our little video from a rare early season trip on the Upper Klamath: http://www.youtube.com/user/MomentumRafting#p/a/u/0/RhrWRxL3968
Definitely the best big water summer whitewater in the west!
Enjoy our new newsletter style – bigger photos – and hopefully we will get a chance to see you all this spring or summer!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of

We also offer custom 3 to 5-day trips for groups and charter trips.
This is a great trip to combine with a good flight deal and a trip to Crater Lake or the Coast and the redwoods. We can help with a ton of planning advice and recommendations!
The Rogue an extremely regulated river and many of our dates are full. At the bottom of this email is a list of trip dates and space left.
Call or email if you are interested and find out more and book trips online at our Rogue River Page.

Ahhhh… the Upper K….
Summer on the Upper Klamath When Momentum first started the Upper Klamath and the Cal Salmon were the rivers that first drew us to this area. We quickly learned that we were only scratching the surface, but they continue to be “gateway” trips for many of our other rivers. For many the Upper Klamath is a yearly pilgrimage (along with a Shakespeare play) and it is definitely the most exciting summer class-IV day trip in the West – it is just really really fun! Join us and see why this run’s fame and popularity grows every year. We have day trips on almost every day except Wednesday’s or you can check out a weekend 2-day trip.
You can also take advantage of Allegiant Air’s Friday/Monday schedule – a weekend in Ashland plus the Upper K!
There is more Upper Klamath info at the Upper Klamath Rafting Page, And check out the video form last weeks trip: http://www.youtube.com/user/MomentumRafting#p/a/u/0/RhrWRxL3968.

the Lower Gorges of the Owyhee
Late Spring Lower Owyhee 6-day Inflatable Kayaking Expedition Six days immersed in one of the most remote, wild, and beautiful areas of the United States. Six days of paddling, hiking, and exploring the “Grand Canyon of Oregon” at a time and in a way that few have ever enjoyed it! One of the most unique trips offered anywhere. Join us this June!
There is more Lower Owyhee Kayaking info at the Lower Owyhee Inflatable Kayaking Page.
As we said in the beginning this is going to be an amazing spring! If you are into last minute planning we still have some space on our Lower Owyhee trips – the Grand Canyon of Oregon, our California Salmon trips – combined with the Scott for one of the ultimate class V adventures in the country, and our Illinois trips - considered by some to be the best wilderness trip in the country. It is not every year we get water like this!
Like last year there are a ton of deals into Medford (MFR) if you book ahead of time. Try Orbitz.com, or if you are less selective about dates and you are flying from Los Angeles, Vegas, or Mesa Arizona check out the ridiculous Allegiant Air prices (as low as $15 one way!!!). In a quick search I found tickets from New York for $350!
We have started a little blog about Ashland (our home) and the surrounding area. Guides, staff, and friends will be adding to it regularly. Check it out here: http://ashlandoregonraftingandtravel.com/ - and shoot us an email if you want to add to it!
Become a Fan of our Facebook Page – we have a new video camera and it is becoming a fixture on our rivers – lots of new video soon!

World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…
Hello,
How are you? We hope everyone is having an amazing winter! Over the last few weeks we have been hammered with snow – it has been great! We should have a long season on our spring rivers like the Cal Salmon, Illinois, and Owyhee. It is going to be an unbelievable spring!
Before I get to our spring trips and news I want to thank you all once again for the wonderful reviews in places like TripAdvisor.com and Yelp.com. Online reviews are changing the way people shop for trips and make traveling easier for all of us!
Our winter has been very busy and with all the snow we are really excited for spring! Both the Owyhee and the Illinois will be written up in Outside Magazine and the California Salmon looks to have the best snow pack it has had in a few years. We have added a bunch of new Rogue dates for the summer (one of the best summer wilderness trips anywhere). We are also excited to offer a trip in August on British Columbia’s wild Chilko River – you can read more about it in the news section below.
Bookings for all our spring trips are already coming in and summer trips on the Rogue are filling up - if you are interested or have questions give us a call or an email! We hope to see you in the spring and summer!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions
The California Salmon 2 to 4-Day – Every spring starts with this one.
The Salmon has a relatively short season and the trips are booking up fast. So, even if you are just interested but not sure yet drop us an email or give us a call with a date range so we can warn you if the trip starts getting full.
There is more Cal Salmon info at the California Salmon Rafting Page.
There are more photos at our Cal Salmon facebook page.
The Illinois 4-Day – Class 4+ (V) - One of the great wilderness river journeys in the country - some say the best. Few rivers can match its combination of extreme isolation, solitude, beauty, and whitewater. Trips are kept very small with a 2 or 3 to one guest to guide ratio and the season can be very short. This is already becoming one of our most sought after spring trips - call or email if you have any questions.
There is more Illinois info at the Illinois Rafting Page.
There are more photos (and a high water winter video!) at our Illinois facebook page.
The Lower Owyhee 5-day – The Grand Canyon of Oregon - it has been compared to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks but in the end it probably defies direct comparisons. A 5-day wilderness journey through one of the most remote and bizzarly beautiful canyons in the continental U.S. with hot springs, beautiful side hikes, petroglyphs, and fun mild rapids (a great family option). We have trips scheduled in April and May.
There is more Lower Owyhee info at the Owyhee River Rafting Page.
There are great photos on our Owyhee River Facebook page.
The Middle Owyhee – This is one of the most exotic and rarely run river trips in the country. It combines dramatic dark sheer canyon walls, big rapids, and it is even more remote then the Lower. One of Pete’s favorites. This trip was featured on OPB’s Oregon Field Guide. While there is only one big rapid the remoteness makes it a true expedition.
There is more Middle Owyhee info at the Middle River Rafting Page.
There are great photos on our Owyhee River Facebook page.
The Lower Owyhee 6-day Inflatable Kayaking Expedition – Class III/IV – Six days immersed in one of the most remote, wild, and beautiful areas of the United States. Six days of paddling, hiking, and exploring the “Grand Canyon of Oregon” at a time and in a way that few have ever enjoyed it! One of the most unique trips offered anywhere.
There is more Lower Owyhee Kayaking info at the Lower Owyhee Inflatable Kayaking Page.
There are great photos on our Owyhee River Facebook page.
Rogue River 3 To 4-Day Wilderness Trip -An iconic American classic, a wilderness playground. One of the world’s great summer wilderness trips complete with remote riverside lodges. The rapids and the choice of craft make the Rogue almost unmatched in its ability to satisfy a wide range of tastes and skill levels. We generally don’t feature summer trips in our winter newsletter, but the Rogue is extremely regulated and there is limited space - most of our trips will have only 10 to 12 people. Check it out this summer!
There is more info at the Rogue River Page.
We have more spring trips online like the Lower Klamath / Clear Creek 3-Day Inflatable Kayaking trip. Check them out and call if you have any questions!
- British Columbia’s Chilko, Chilcotin and Fraser Rivers: Join us this August for a journey down the Chilko, Chilcotin and Fraser Rivers – a trip unmatched in its scenic diversity and huge stretches of class IV whitewater. Big John, Farwell, and Lava Canyons; the continent’s longest stretch of commercially navigable whitewater; bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, wolves, and birds of all types; all set in the legendary wilderness of British Columbia. Read more about it here>>
- More trips on the Wild and Scenic Rogue River: The Rogue is one of the best summer wilderness trips anywhere and one of our most popular trips last year. The river is extremely regulated to protect its wilderness character and we worked hard to increase the number of trips we can offer. We have some great specialty trips too – a local wine and food trip! Visit the Rogue Rafting page>>
- Our website and Facebook : We have updated out website once again. Lots of new photos – tell us if you like it! We also will be doing some “Facebook Only” specials this year. If you have not yet become a fan of Momentum Rafting…
- The snow pack: WOW! In the last two weeks we have gone from 50% of average to 200% on some of our rivers. It has been epic! And the skiing has been pretty good too:).

The weather is finally changing and we are winding down the 2009 season. We have a lot to talk about in this newsletter - This winters trips to Patagonia, Our 2010 schedule and online booking discount, and a brand new fall newsletter section on protecting the rivers we run. But, as always, we want to start off by thanking all of you for making this past season, once again, the best season yet.
With the economy we realize that many people were making hard choices about what they could and could not do. And as the season went on we realized more acutely how important your support, word of mouth recommendations to friends, and online reviews on places like Yelp and Trip Advisor are to us. For those who had a chance to join us this year we are honored that you chose a trip with us and we are deeply thankful that you chose to share your personalities, interests, and amazing life stories. And for those who were unable to join us this year for whatever reason we hope that you will have a chance again in the future. You all continue to help shape Momentum –Thank You!
Below there is more info on:
- Chile this winter - For many of us this is our favorite river in the world and now is the time to start getting plane tickets.
- Our 2010 schedule is out and many of our popular spring trips and next summer’s trips on the Rogue are starting to book. We are also doing an early booking online discount.
- Our new “What is happening on the river(s) you have run” section. Basically it has information on what is going on in each watershed to protect it and, if you would like, what you can do to help. We are very excited about this and hope to make it a yearly part of the fall newsletter!
We have also compiled some of the best photos we have of this year’s trips on Facebook here. If you have any good ones you would like to share you can add them to the Momentum page – we would love to see them!
For those who are not joining us down south have a great winter and hopefully we will see you next year! Thanks again for another incredible season!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions
Chile - Patagonia’s Rio Futaleufu: - Join us for our annual 9-day luxury wilderness journey into the heart of Patagonia. This is truly one of the earth’s magical places and a trip of a lifetime (and my personal “favorite river in the world”).
The trip includes:
- One of the world’s greatest and most beautiful whitewater rivers.
- Whitewater from high volume class III to some of the biggest class V run in the world (your choice).
- Luxury wilderness camps set among glacier-capped peaks.
- Tons of other activities - hiking, mountain biking, word-class fishing…
You can see a video about the trip at: http://www.momentumriverexpeditions.com/chilevideo.htm.
Now is the time to get the best flight deals - If you are interested or have any questions call or email!
Our 2010 Oregon and Northern California Rafting Schedule is Out - Check out our 2010 spring and summer rafting schedule. Many of our popular spring trips and next summer’s trips on the Rogue are starting to book. We are also doing a pre season online booking discount for 2010 trips! We have just finished our first year of our new online booking system and so far it been a huge success! So this fall we are offering a 10% discount for any 2010 domestic trip booked online (or online inquire made) by Dec 30th 2009. Find the trip and date that works best for you – click “book online” on our web site, and when you get to the “pricing” section enter the promotional code. The only catch is you need to check out our Momentum Facebook Page. You don’t have to have a Facebook account to do it, but if you do you should become a fan – we update the page with pictures and news all the time! For those of you who feel like Facebook is about the most annoying thing in the world – we understand – it will only take a second to get the code….
We love the rivers we run and feel that it is critical to preserve their wildness, remoteness, and beauty. As a company we have always supported and been very involved in protecting them and we are lucky to live in an area that has an especially rich array of groups that look for effective, logical, and broadly supported solutions. Lately we have also been thinking about ways that we could give you the option to either become more educated about the rivers you have visited or to help out. So every fall we are going to include this section in our newsletter and update you on what is going on in each watershed. We are also going to have much more frequent updates from the groups involved posted on the Momentum Facebook Page and on our Blog for those wanting to keep up with things as they happen.
We are in a time when nobody seems to agree on anything and facts, common sense, and a willingness to find common solutions give way to emotion, anger, and a mind set that can be compared to a small child stuffing their fists in their ears and hollering “I’m not listening, I’m not listening!”. Because of this we tried to choose campaigns that would be effective and have broad support. However, we understand that we all have very different opinions and we understand that our most important job is to show you these places, give you a break from everyday life, and run the highest quality river trips in the west. After that it is up to you.
So this yearly section should be a great way to learn more about the rivers you have visited, and if you are so inclined and find it to be an idea you support, a great way to help keep them in the state you enjoyed them!
The Rogue River, Illinois River, Lower Klamath River, and Clear Creek -
Siskiyou Crest National Monument – We love this possibility!
The “National Monument” designation is a great way to integrate a wide array of traditional and growing uses, protections, and local community and tribal needs. This effort will likely take years and help is needed for a variety of grassroots tasks, including sending letters to the editor of newspapers in support of the proposal, gaining business endorsements, and organizing or hosting educational events and presentations. This campaign is in its early stages, and we are so excited about the possibilities! For more information, visit www.siskiyoucrest.org (they have a great interactive map).
The Lower Rogue River -
Save the Wild Rogue:
This effort has very wide ranging support and just needs a final nudge so it can finish its long journey through our government and become law. To help take a few minutes to make two phone calls in support of this effort. Please call Senator Ron Wyden (202-224-5244) and Representative Peter DeFazio (202-225-6416) and 1) thank them both for introducing the Wild Rogue legislation and 2) ask that they work to get this bill through committee and passed into law this year. For more information, visit www.savethewildrogue.org.
The Owyhee River -
Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness Area:
The California Salmon -
The Salmon River Restoration Council:
The Salmon River Restoration council is one of the most unique grass roots groups we have seen. Drawing from a diverse and extremely off the beaten path community of less than 200 people the group manages to do an amazing amount of work protecting one of our all time favorite rivers (in fact they are so busy it can be difficult to even get a hold of them!). Check out their web site at: www.srrc.org.
The Klamath River -
The Klamath Basin is widely recognized as one of the most ecologically important watersheds in the United States. It is also the site of a long simmering conflict over water policy, wetlands, and endangered species. There is a huge need for viable solutions to the basin’s fundamental problems. However, the problems are among the most difficult, confusing, and politicized issues facing any river in the United States. Basically, the river’s water is over allocated, the water is naturally warm and full of nutrients but farming and reservoirs have made the temperatures and nutrient levels bad for indigenous fish, and declining fish runs have damaged the economies and lively hoods of downstream Tribes and Fishing Industries.
There are a host of environmental, Tribal, Fishing, and farming groups involved. Many have different solutions and issue. If you are interested in the challenges facing one of our favorite rivers please email us for more info.

The river offers fun splashy rapids, rugged mountain scenery, beautiful side hikes, and tons of wildlife. For those wanting more excitement we can bring along inflatable kayaks, making the Lower Klamath great for a wide range of ages.

World-Class River Trips Oregon,
Northern California, and beyond…
Hello,
How are you? We hope you are having a great winter! There is so much going on here at Momentum I am not sure where to start… How about our spring trips?
With the start of our first full season on the Illinois (woo hoo!), a great start to the snow pack on the Owyhee, and of course the Cal Salmon we have our best spring schedule yet! For those who want to check out a spring river, but not big whitewater the Lower Owyhee is one of the most beautiful, unique, and rarely run trips in the country and this should be a great Owyhee season. It will also be written up in National Geographic Adventure sometime in the next month or so.
We are extremely excited to offer a new trip this year – 3 and 4-day Rogue River trips! The Rogue is one of the most famous and best summer wilderness trips anywhere and there is the unique option to enjoy it with evenings spent at remote riverside lodges only accessible by boat (so cool!). The rapids and the choice of craft make the Rogue almost unmatched in its ability to satisfy a wide range of tastes and skill levels – ages 7 to people wanting more adventure (kayaks!). We generally don’t feature summer trips in our winter newsletter, but the Rogue is extremely regulated and there is limited space - most of our trips will have only 10 to 12 people. We are also just really excited about it! Check it out here>>

Below there is more info on all of our spring trips and probably our biggest “news” section ever. There is info on our new web site (have you seen it?), our new online booking option, an “exploratory” low water Inflatable Kayak trip on the Illinois, and a little more on the snow pack.
With the addition of the Rogue this year and the Illinois last year we now offer trips on all the regions most spectacular rivers – and with this region that says a lot. Although our trips and our company are still small because of the richness and diversity of this area we are lucky to be able to offer a quality and variety of river adventures that rivals any big multi-region, multi-country company. We are honored and with the continued support of the best guests around we are very excited for the future.
Bookings for all our spring trips are already coming in (some Salmon and Illinois dates are very full) so if you are interested or have questions give us a call or an email! We hope to see you in the spring and summer!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions

Rogue River 3 To 4-Day Wilderness Trip - Our newest trip! An iconic American classic, a wilderness playground. One of the world’s great summer wilderness trips complete with remote riverside lodges. The rapids and the choice of craft make the Rogue almost unmatched in its ability to satisfy a wide range of tastes and skill levels. Check it out this summer!
There is more info at the Rogue River Page.
We have more spring trips online like the Lower Klamath / Clear Creek 3-Day Inflatable Kayaking trip and the The Lower Owyhee 6-Day Inflatable Kayaking Expedition. Check them out and call if you have any questions!
News
- Web site Update: We have updated our web site. Some changes like the big photos are cosmetic and easy to see, but the big changes are under the hood. We are trying to make it more interactive and useful – something we began last year with the ability for guests to add testimonials to the site. This year we have integrated it with our new online booking system, Facebook, a great review site called YELP!, and a more powerful blog. - Online Booking: Yup, you cab book trips online now. We hope people find it simple and easy to use. You can access it on any river page. We are really excited about this; if you get a chance to use it tell us what you think!
- Facebook: Who is on Facebook? It seems like more and more people every day. Facebook allows for a great interaction with guests, guides, and Momentum. Anybody can post pictures and add content. You can become a fan of Momentum River Expeditions and be the first to hear news, add trip photos, etc. We will be doing a contest soon. Become a Fan of Momentum Rafting on Facebook.
- YELP!: Yelp is an awesome new review site. If you live in any major city it is the best place to get restaurant reviews. Momentum has page and you check out reviews and add reviews here.
- Late spring low water inflatable kayak expedition on the Illinois: See the Illinois at a time and in a way that very few have seen it. Our first trip will be this June and it will set the stage for future trips in years to come. If you are interested you can read more about it here.
- Our Upper Klamath Facebook Page: Help! It is our most popular trip and the first trip for many of our guests, but we have very few good pictures our video. Anyone have any? The Facebook link is here.
- The snow pack: I have been getting a few very good questions about the snow pack – especially from people in California (it’s dry there!). We are actually doing pretty well. Most of our rivers have a near average snow pack – perfect for the season ahead. Many of our dam fed rivers (the Klamath and the Rogue) also have the benefit of leftover water from last years extremely wet year. The Cal Salmon is our one river that is below average, but it should not effect our April, May, and early June trips. We may just have a shorter season. However, the long term forecast looks very favorable for all our rivers in February and March so it is still too early to write off those mid June Salmon trips!

Thanks for a wonderful season!
To all our past and present guests and staff - Thank you for making our 5th season the best yet! We had a great water-filled spring and an exciting summer that included wonderful weather and some unexpected forest fire drama. As I say every year your personalities, interests, amazing life stories, and choices are shaping Momentum and we are deeply thankful for that.
We have some amazing photos from this year! As we collect them we will post them on our new blog: http://blog.momentumriverexpeditions.com/.
As the web continues to grow there are more and more review sites being used for reviews and testimonials (our website now has up to date testimonials for each river). These sites are great tools for travelers and we want to thank everyone for their reviews and feedback - to us directly and on sites like Yelp.com and Yahoo Travel.
Below there is info on our winter trips to Chile (are you coming?). Check out our Chile video here. We have spent the last week helping people with their flight arrangements.
Our 2009 trip schedule is also up and some of our most popular trips are starting to fill. You can check out the full schedule here, or just go to the river page you are interested in.

>>Spring 2008
A HUGE hit on the Illinois River!
|
|
Hello Everyone,
We hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring we are having (except for the last week of course!). We are over half way through our spring rafting season and have had a ton of incredible trips so far. Thanks so much to all who have joined us! Now we are looking forward to the last part of spring and to our summer trips. We still have a few weekends left on the Cal Salmon with space left for those looking for a last minute trip down one of the most amazing whitewater stretches in the country.
For those looking for summer rafting and inflatable kayaking on the Upper and Lower Klamath the flows look to be great (150 + % snow pack!) and now is the time to get the first choice of dates as we are starting to fill up.
Once again thanks to all who joined us on the Middle and Lower Owyhee, our inaugural season on the Illinois, and the Salmon, it has been a wonderful start to the season! Below there is info on late spring and summer trips. We hope to see you this summer!
We hope to see you in the summer!
Kind Regards,
Pete and the staff of

The California Salmon 2 to 3-Day–Every spring starts with this one, and we still have a littel space left in June! The Salmon is one of the most spectacular rafting trips in the country; it is world-class whitewater in our back yard.

SUMMER RAFTING TRIPS

Summer On The Upper Klamath
The Upper Klamath River is definitely the most exciting summer class-IV trip in the West. We have a ton of water and great summer flows this year! Join us and see why this run’s fame and popularity grows every year. For info, visit our Upper Klamath page.

Lower Klamath Trips
2 to 4 days in remote and beautiful Northern California. It is the perfect introduction to rafting, river travel, and camping, and one of the best rafting trips in the country for families with young children. The river offers fun splashy rapids, rugged mountain scenery, beautiful side hikes, and tons of wildlife. For those wanting more excitement we can bring along inflatable kayaks, making the Lower Klamath great for a wide range of ages.

|
High Adventure Trips on the Lower Klamath
The Lower K is a beautiful down river trip (meaning all of our gear is in rafts and each night we camp along sandy beaches) and its rapids, while mild in rafts, are perfect and very exciting for inflatable kayaks. We love inflatable kayaking and guests that joined us last year have been raving about them. It’s just you, your kayak, your recently learned skills, rapids at “face” level, and guides leading the way giving you tips, encouragement, and a helping hand when needed. A unique and exciting river experience.
There is more info at the Klamath River Kayaking page.
